Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays by Palm Beach Gardens dentist Dr. Rudnick are conservative and natural-looking tooth restorations. Inlays and onlays are much like a puzzle piece, custom-fabricated by our dental lab to perfectly fit the cusps of your tooth for maximum protection and an eye-pleasing appearance.

If you have rear teeth that have mild or moderate tooth decay, or have teeth that are fractured or cracked, but the damage isn’t severe enough for a dental crown, perhaps the answer to restoring your teeth is in dental inlays or onlays. Made of porcelain, composite resin or sometimes gold, inlays and onlays are able to restore damaged teeth and are often used to replace metal fillings. They are securely bonded to your teeth and give you a more natural-looking smile.

Much like a filling, an inlay is used to treat teeth that have decay or damage within the tooth surface. Decay or damage occurring to the upper surface of the teeth may require an inlay. Inlays are placed during two different visits to Dr. Rudnick. During the first visit, an impression of your teeth is made and then sent to a lab. You will be given a temporary inlay to wear between your first and second visits. Your inlay will be matched to your tooth’s specific needs at the lab. During your second visit, Dr. Rudnick will remove your temporary and fit the permanent inlay over your tooth. They are permanently bonded to the tooth, which adds structural integrity while preventing bacteria from entering where cavities can form.

An onlay is more extensive than an inlay, covering much more of the tooth, and is sometimes referred to as a partial crown. If your tooth decay extends to one or more of the top projections of the tooth (cusps), onlays may be the best thing for you. These are placed in much the same way as inlays. When you come back for your onlay fitting, the permanent restoration is placed and bonded to the tooth using a strong dental resin. Onlays can keep you from having to eventually come back to the dentist for more extensive procedures, such as crowns, bridges, or dental implants.

Why Choose an Inlay or Onlay by a Palm Beach Gardens Cosmetic Dentist?

Inlays and onlays may be the preferred restoration for many reasons:

• They increase tooth stability compared to fillings.
• Unlike metal fillings, inlays and onlays will not expand or contract due to temperature changes caused by hot or cold foods.
• They are a great alternative to a crown when damage to the tooth is not extensive.
• Look and feel better than amalgam fillings.
• They can strengthen your teeth up to 75% more because of the way they are made.
• Materials are natural in appearance, and resist discoloration through time.

In the office of Dr. Rudnick, inlays and onlays are designed of ceramic materials that match the translucency and color of enamel. Our dental lab is able to get a very specific fit while creating an inlay or onlay, so your restoration will look attractive and provide protection that will last longer than a traditional filling.

Dr. Rudnick prefers inlays and onlays for our Palm Beach County guests because they are a restoration that looks better and lasts longer. Contact Rudnick Dentistry to schedule your appointment today!
